Deal of the Day - Crucial DDR3-2000 at Newegg for $215 after MIR
Sep 30, 2008 - 10:38 PM - by freecableguy
UPDATE (10/4/2008): Back in stock! (That was fast.) Get go 'em - only 4 sets left as of 9pm PT.

UPDATE (10/3/2008): Well, looks like you guys have pounced on this. Not only is Newegg out of stock (estimated restock date is 10/7) but they've also increased the price to $295, which takes some of the fun out of the original deal. Hopefully it cools back down and these modules come in around $200/pair again.

My favorite modules, by far, are those found in the Crucial Ballistix DDR3-2000 (PC3-16000) 2x1GB memory kit. If you need DDR3 performance memory, this is it. 2GB of the best damn stuff in the world (remember, don't get too excited, we're talking memory here) for just $215 after MIR (plus shipping and whatever the state steals from you in tax)...sign me up!

Motherboard Monitor 5 (MBM5) Core Temperature Plugin Updated!
Aug 21, 2008 - 10:24 PM - by freecableguy
Following Benson Inkley's IDF 2008 Technical Presentation on Intel's Processor Temperature Specification we've updated our Motherboard Monitor 5 (MBM5) Core Temperature Plugin to version 1.30 as a results of some DTS Tjunction temperature changes. Actually, they haven't changed, we just didn't know exactly what they were...

You can read more about the need for this update over at AnandTech if you haven't heard the news already.

We're happy to announce that Motherboard Monitor 5, with the help of our plugin, is now the first Intel Core(TM) temperature monitor/logger to incorporate official 45nm CPU Tjunction values from Intel.

Deep thought of the day...

A patch shouldn't be considered a 'hotfix' if you have to reboot after you apply it, should it?

A small contest for those that know...
Apr 24, 2008 - 7:48 PM - by freecableguy
UPDATE (05/28/2008): It was Comcast. I awoke today with a new IP and everything is working just as before.

About three months ago I noticed I could no longer access Netflix.com, which made managing my account and selecting new movies from home next to impossible (I was forced to VPN to another system outside of my LAN to access the site). This became so tedious that I eventually gave up on Netflix altogether and have been using Blockbuster Online ever since. However, I prefer Netflix.com and would really like to go back to them.

Here's how this is going to work. The FIRST PERSON to lead me through a fix will win a brand new Bigfoot Networks Killer NIC K1 (see here). I will package and ship the card ANYWHERE in the world. All you have to do is help me figure out what is going on with my network.

To help out, I'm listing here everything I know to date about this problem. This information should help you help me.

1) My ISP is Comcast.

2) I can ping www.netflix.com, I just can't access the site via ANY browser.

3) This problem affects all of my systems equally - three systems running Windows Vista Ultimate X64 (two with SP1 installed) and one running Windows XP SP3 (final). Two systems are laptops, one is a desktop and one is used as an HTPC. Each uses Wireless-N cards.

4) I have a TRENDnet TEW-633GR Wireless-N router.

5) I've taken the time to install a network protocol analyzer (Wireshark, formerly named Ethereal) and believe I may have located the immediate cause, just not the reason behind the failure. Here's a screenshot of the error, which appears to be a small discrepancy in the checksum of the TCP ACK packet from the netflix.com server... [Read More]
