Phenom B3 stepping discussion

Talk about B3 Phenoms here in this thread.

No Fanboy posts please, if you must compare do it like for like and please don't quote Intel CPU's clock higher etc.

Ok to get things going I thought a little comparison is needed.

First up Intel Q9650@3.4GHZ, 4GB ram around 1120 5-5-5-15 Tweaked out on 780i EVGA, 8800 Ultra stock clocks

Vs

Phenom 9850 252x13.5 for 3.4GHZ, 4GB ram around 1000MHZ 5-5-5-15 tweaked out on Gigabyte 790FX DQ6, 8800Ultra

As you see as close as I could get clock for clock and the Phenom just wins out.

Interesting to note the CPU score was better on the Intel quad but the shader scores are better on the AMD Quad.

next up some L3 cache everest testing and the effects on memory performance remembering L3 and the MCH clock speeds are dependent on each other.

With the help of Tony's excellent guide I managed to overclock my Phenom 9850 Black Edition to 3GHz.

System:

Phenom X4 9850 Black Edition
DFI Lanparty 790FX-M2R
2GB of OCZ PC2-6400 Flex CL3
ATI Radeon X1650XT
OCZ ProXStream 1000W
Scythe Mine
Windows Vista x64 SP1

The CPU Clock Ratio function in BIOS would not work for me, so I had to adjust the multi as Tony explained in his guide. I could not get into Windows with multi 15x tho, because some of the voltage settings did not seem to work. I had to boot Win with a lower multi and adjusted all settings but CPU voltage with AMD Overdrive. This behaviour occurred on both the latest official and beta BIOSes.

Voltage increasing works for me only if I use the special add option.

HT Link Multi 7 ("1.4GHz") worked best for me.

Pretty relaxed memory settings to sort out possible memory problems.

I have no issues with it with phenom, it have hit the same clocks i hit on the DQ6 but obviously i have to set all the voltages manually on the DFI where they are linked on the DQ6.

My board leaves for RMA swap over the next 2 days so i will be posting withe the Asus once it arrives and im still hopeful of rescuing the DQ6 also ;

Yeah I had the same issues with the first 790FX-M2R with it just not acting right and being flaky at random

Concluded the following after a ton of ram testing on the DFI.

If the ram is stable but the NB is 99% you will get C1 and hang going into bios.
You have to dial out the hangs with voltage but getting into the bios is the issue

Working on a solid 1066 2.4GHZ Nb and 3.4GHZ CPU setting now to post up. Of course CPU voltage and NB voltage is going to different CPU to CPU but at least I will show what should work if the CPU is peachy.

You can of course just lower the NB clock to 2.2GHZ as the gains going higher are small.

Also remember tRFC is not detected off the SPF properly on the DFI by bios, so you need to force it manually.
With 4GB and 8GB kits on any 790FX you need 195ns minimum, higher is better.
